The Stokes Life http://joshuastokes.com :: a work in progess posterous.com Tue, 08 Feb 2011 13:03:19 -0800 Be Open http://joshuastokes.com/be-open http://joshuastokes.com/be-open There are many aspects to deciding on what type of product or service you want to bring to the market. You work tirelessly to get it just right. You have a clear concise vision in your head that makes sense. You share it with those close to you and the feedback is great... you think you've got it!

Ready for market you have your first presentation, then another. Soon you realize your perfect idea isn't so perfect. At least the way you envisioned it.

This happens all the time in business and in life. What you think in your own mind is only as good as you belive it to be.

The key to not falling in the pile of other good ideas gone bad, is make sure when you deliver your idea do it with passion and most importantly don't be scared of the feedback you recieve.

Feedback can be used to morph what you set out to build into many different flavors. Don't fight it! Listen and be inventive.

I tend to get aggrivated and at times and want to drive my ideas the exact way I want them heard. Pride can be so destructive.

Just thought I would share a lesson I have been learning over the past few years of running my own business.

Thanks fir reading!

Mon, 01 Feb 2010 01:00:00 -0800 HBO Real Sports - Concussions in the NFL http://joshuastokes.com/hbo-real-sports-concussions-in-the-nfl http://joshuastokes.com/hbo-real-sports-concussions-in-the-nfl
Concussions

HBO Real Sports,

First off thank you for bringing this to light. I have no association with the NFL rather I am a fan of the sport at all levels. I enjoy watching the sport whether high school, college, or NFL.

My love for the sport has grown recently as my son just finished his 4th year of playing football at age 9. We live in Oklahoma, and like our surrounding states they start them young. When I played football in high school we didn't put on pads for the first time until I was in 7th grade.

I have helped coach my sons team for the past four years. I have to say I have seen him take some hits that I wouldn't get up from. He of course knows it is part of the sport and this past year he has learned to 'unleash' when he is at point of impact. It is constantly taught, "it is better to hit than to get hit". Which makes sense and for the most part is true. However, I can't help but think what is really going on inside that helmet.

I am more concerned about the life my son will live in his thirties than how far he will go in the sport of football. He loves playing and I have expressed safety in all the drills and how he plays but as we all know it is a matter of time before the big hit comes. And as they stated, it may be the total combined hits taken over ones career that cause the most damage.

I can't help but ask as a concerned parent and coach of these young athletes... What long term effects do hits to the head have when they start at the age of six years old? Have any studies of this nature been done on the youth football?

Again, thank you for your attention to this issue and if you have any input I would greatly appreciate it.

Sat, 30 Jan 2010 18:37:00 -0800 Haiti Earthquake 3 « merging cultures http://joshuastokes.com/haiti-earthquake-3-merging-cultures http://joshuastokes.com/haiti-earthquake-3-merging-cultures

Today, I have just heard of a miracle.

A 5 year old boy was found alive after 8 days under the rubble.

How is that possible? It can only be God.

The only other miracle I have heard of was when some friends gave birth to  a baby that the hospital had said was dead. Hospitals don’t make those kinds of errors.

World Relief’s team is continuing to feed thousands of people, we are expanding our feeding centers daily, and providing medical to hundreds. The work the team is doing is amazing.

I am so proud to be associated with these guys. They are all so upbeat and full of energy. God is truly working through them. They are having an impact despite the most difficult conditions imaginable.

Keep praying for the people of Haiti and all the relief workers helping. This is the beginning of a long road and we will still be there once CNN has left.

I really enjoy this game. My friend David got it for Kaleb for Christmas. I have never personally played hockey or much understood the rules of the sport. After a couple days of hacking my way through on the xbox I have to say I have anew found respect for the sport in general. It is similar to basketball but with a few twists and some hard pounding. I am excited to go to another hockey game with an understanding of the game. A definite recommend for the xbox.

I am very proud of this 'not so' little girl :( She has grown so fast! Seems like I say that more often now. Her dedication to practicing the clarinet has resulted in a great musician with a bright future. She already has her sights on Juilliard. Aim big I say!

Mon, 07 Dec 2009 22:20:00 -0800 Fluid - Turn your favorite sites into Mac desktop apps http://joshuastokes.com/fluid-turn-your-favorite-sites-into-mac-deskt http://joshuastokes.com/fluid-turn-your-favorite-sites-into-mac-deskt
Web applications like Gmail, Facebook, Campfire and Pandora are becoming more and more like desktop applications every day. Running each of these web apps in an individual tab in your browser can be a real pain.

Fluid lets you create a Site Specific Browser (SSB) out of any website or web application, effectively turning your favorite web apps into desktop apps.

Using Fluid to create an SSB out of your favorite website is simple. Enter the website's URL, provide a name, and optionally choose an icon. Click "Create", and within seconds your chosen website has been converted into a fully native Mac desktop application that appears in your Dock.

Version 0.9.6   |   3.6 MB

Mac OS X 10.5 or later

------------------------------------------------

I have found this to be a great app addition on my Mac. I have taken sites like GrooveShark and created my own apps. For instance. I like listening to GrooveShark for my music throughout the day. Yet, somehow I always forget the tab I have open and end up closing the window I have my tunes running through. Which in turn no more music!

With Fluid app. I have an app "GrooveShark" that is open and isn't in my browser (FireFox). Fluid App http://fluidapp.com is free to use and is extremely fast.

I have to get this DIY USB wall outlet. Check it out!

Lindsey and I really enjoy watching the Pirates of the Carribean trilogy. It makes for a great lazy Saturday form time to time.

I think we are mostly intrueged by the music. Hanz Zimmmer has a great ability to tie the emotions of what you see through the music x1000.

So I thought i would share what I am listening to in my dim lit office.

Fri, 27 Nov 2009 09:50:00 -0800 Virtual elbows. My first BlackFriday online only experience http://joshuastokes.com/virtual-elbows-my-first-blackfriday-online-on-0 http://joshuastokes.com/virtual-elbows-my-first-blackfriday-online-on-0

I had been debating purchasing the new Roku player and after I heard all of the buzz about it from the Streaming Media West show I figured it might be worth checking into. In my own words the Roku player is for those that have a good internet connection and want to gain access to a variety of online shows and entertain meant that you can't find on TV. And the best part is; it streams it all to your TV.

Some of the current partners Roku partners are NetFlix, MLB, Amazon, Pandora, Revision3, and more. From the looks of it they are just getting started! The quality of video that is now delivered online in most cases you will get a bit higher than DVD quality streaming. And on LCD it is crispy!

Depending on the model the Roku ranges from $79 to $129. It is a one time hardware purchase and that's it! Now granted, you will need a membership to some of the channels, i/e/ NetFlix ($8/mo) and MLB ($20/mo). But other channels are free of charge and in most cases are sponsored based.

So this being BlackFriday. Last night I received a tweet from @RokuPlayer announcing they were going to have a 50% off offer for their Roku HD-XR model to the first 500 at 8am. Laptop in hand and credit card propped and ready to go... at the top of the hour the page refreshed and the clicking commenced. I realize I didn't wait in line all night and yes I was still in bed ;). But you could imagine the thousands of people trying get in on this deal all at the same time.

As the pages loaded throughout the checkout process things started getting extremely slow. Slow enough that when I entered the coupon code I was welcome with "The service is unavailable" Nooo!!!!!!! In came twitter... I started posting messages to @RokuPlayer to see if their servers went down. And they kindly replied saying to keep trying. Then in came the messages that everyone else was having the same issues. We were virtually knocking each other out of the race to 500.

It was a fun experience chatting with others trying to get in on the deal and although I didn't brave elements of the in store black friday. It was a race for the deal. Some got it and some didn't .

I am happy to say, come 7 to 10 days I'll have a Roku sitting on the front porch. Whooop!

Mon, 23 Nov 2009 22:35:00 -0800 The holidays are here and I miss the city. http://joshuastokes.com/the-holidays-are-here-and-i-miss-the-city-0 http://joshuastokes.com/the-holidays-are-here-and-i-miss-the-city-0

Last year we took an amazing trip to New York City. I still remember being nervous and excited for the the trip. So many unknowns... Driving in the city, Walking in the midst of millions, Getting on a subway and ending up lost, and of course millions of people. All of which kept the nerves on edge! As I think back on our time there, I have to say it was nothing we had expected and everything we had hoped for.

Here a is a recent photo taken by Trey Ratcliff. He is an amazing photographer check out his site http://www.stuckincustoms.com. This picture was taken one block from where we stayed. The second two are photos of where we stayed for four days. The Double Tree. I know this is old news... but seeing Trey's photo has me wishing for a road trip.
